The DIPOA is pleased to report that
the lawsuit involving the transfer of West Surf Beach to the Town of Dauphin Island has been
resolved in a mutually agreeable manner.
As a result of the Settlement, the Town and
people of Dauphin Island can unite in their efforts to address the critical
issues that
the island faces today. Under the terms of the settlement, the conveyance
of the
West Surf Beach to the Town of Dauphin Island can now be accomplished
and allows the
Town of Dauphin Island seven years to secure adequate funding and
commence a beach
renourishment project.
With the settlement of this litigation, the Town of Dauphin Island
can now actively proceed with its efforts to address and solve the erosion
problem on the
West End. The Town can also proceed to take the necessary steps to insure that
Dauphin Island is restored in such a manner that it can continue to
act as an effective
barrier island and buffer of the Southwest Alabama coast.
