Tuesday, June 23, 1959 - Some day Mobile will make
a strong bid to become the oil capitol of the world. Sounds a bit
far fetched at present. But facts will show it isn't completely
ridiculous... Several factors will help the city up the ladder.
A primary one is the Port of Mobile, whose heaviest shipping item
already is crude and refined petroleum products. Another is the
frontier status of Alabama. A few persons with money venture into
the area. Sometimes they get a few hard knocks like the early Western
pioneers did. Some tuck their tails and run back to oil 'civilization,'
where their money usually rides on a surer bet. A few independents
already have cast their eyes this way. Despite the hard knocks,
there are some refreshing factors about a frontier land.
