US Air Force Early Warning Radar Station, Dauphin Island, AL
693rd AC&W Squadron
Saturday, October 18, 1958 - A new landmark was added to the Dauphin Island
landscape today when the 693rd AC&W Squadron, the Air Force unit manning the new radar site,
erected their "bubble" atop the central tower. Major Ira Adams, commander of the unit,
said the "bubble," a large dome shaped device approximately 50 feet in diameter, is erected
to protect the radar site's vital and sensitive equipment. It is made of a rubberized fabric
material and is inflated by air pressure.
(History editor's note: the frame is visible today as part of the Sea Lab's Estuaruim complex.)
